On the day I got my male betta fish, Neptune, I was excited to put him in the new tank we got him. It needed to be room temperature, so I filled it with cold water, too close to the top by accident so I couldn't just pour the water from the container Neptune was in when I bought him, put some bowl conditioner to remove the chemicals in tap water, and let it sit overnight.
It was room temperature by the time I woke up. Luckily it was Saturday. I took a measuring cup that was just about the right size, took off the lid of the container my betta was inside, and put the cupish part in, with the handle held by me. At first, I tried scooping Neptune. Whoosh! He swam rapidly away. I did a couple of tries, and it didn't work. I was scared I would kill him. Then, I thought of just leaving the cupish part in the water, and just stay still.
It almost worked, because it seems Neptune was curious about the metal measuring cup. He swam closer, and I tried scooping him. It didn't work, because he swam out of it quick. I kept trying. On one attempt, Neptune's mouth actually touch the cup. He backed away, but went into the cup again. Finally, after, say, 9 tries? I got him in the cup. I put Neptune into the tank immediately.
Well, that was done, and I carried the tank to my room. My lesson, never fill a tank with too much water when getting a new fish.
